LinkedIn For HealthCare: More Than 50,000 US Physicians Are LinkedIn

While Sermo and Doximity have reportedly been registering tens of thousands of doctors over the last few years, we decided to take a closer look at HCP activity within LinkedIn. As physicians become part of extended care teams throughout the healthcare system, their presence and activity within LinkedIn will continue to grow.

Based on self-reported titles within LinkedIn, here is the number of doctors for each US specialty area, including residents.  Within these key specialty areas, the total number of practicing HCPs using LinkedIn is well over 50,000.

In addition to individual listings, there are several popular LinkedIn healthcare groups worth mentioning:

With more than 20,000 members, Medical Doctor (MD) Network is a network for physicians to connect with one another and share ideas and best practices regarding the professional, clinical, business, legal and personal issues doctors face. This group was founded by Startup Health.

Innovations in Health  has more than 75,000 members and was founded by Korstiaan van Wyngaarden , the Medical Officer Advanced Diagnostic Imaging at Philips. This is a very active discussion board on LinkedIn, and is now an open group, meaning that comments and discussion are searchable and public.

Founded by Philadelphia area chiropractor, Dr. Len  Schwartz, the Networking for Business Professionals & Doctors  group has more than 35,000 members. The Pro2Pro Network is a marketing company designed to help doctors and professionals automate the growth of their practice by building a strong referral network.

Pharmaceutical companies have also been keeping pace with the growing demand of online social communities and have made their presence known by garnering impressive numbers of both followers and employees on their LinkedIn profiles. Here are some of the leading Pharma companies on LinkedIn.

With almost 100,000,000 users in the US, and more than 200,000,000 connections worldwide, the impact of LinkedIn for professionals is undeniable. As the medical community continues to embrace this dynamic platform, the opportunities for reaching healthcare professionals within LinkedIn will be significant – either directly via InMails and advertising, or through group sponsorship.

Jamie joined Cadient Group in 2010 as a Program/Account Manager and now serves as an Insights Analyst.
